Small but Mighty: How Bacillus Works in Cleaning Applications

Bacillus bacteria are common in microbial cleaning ingredients, including ours at MDG. They are widely used because of their ability to combat typical pain points in the Industrial and Institutional (I&I) cleaning market. But what about these tiny organisms makes them so effective, and how can you use their versatility to expand and strengthen your product lines?

Why are Bacillus effective in cleaning products?

Bacillus-based ingredients have a few key qualities that make them useful additions to cleaning products:

  • They use the components of odor-causing compounds and stains as food. Bacillus consume substances like fats, oils, and grease (FOG), carbohydrates, proteins, using them as food and removing them from the application site. Whether your product is meant to clean a grease trap in an industrial kitchen or a portable toilet in an RV, a Bacillus ingredient can help.
  • They are live microorganisms, which means they grow and multiply. This allows them to continue to work hours or even days after application, reducing the need for frequent application.
  • They produce beneficial enzymes like protease, lipase, and amylase to help break down their food sources into smaller molecules. This breakdown makes it easier for both Bacillus and an application site’s beneficial native bacteria to consume these substances and remove them from the environment.

The Versatility of Bacillus

The qualities that make Bacillus effective enhance the cleaning capabilities of the products they’re added to, meaning they can work on applications like:

  • Carpet, tile, and grout cleaning
  • Drain and sink maintenance
  • Food and pet stain removal
  • Odor control

Another reason why Bacillus bacteria can be used for so many cleaning applications is because they are spore-forming, meaning they remain dormant until they are placed in an environment with optimal conditions for their survival (e.g., an environment with odor-causing compounds for them to consume). Spore-forming bacteria are also very stable. Using one of our powder ingredients in your formulation, you can be sure of that powder staying effective for a long time.

Our liquid ingredients also have a long shelf life for a cleaning ingredient, including very few added components like fragrances or opacifiers that can sometimes make it hard to formulate. Keeping things simple—based around the power of Bacillus bacteria—allows you to use our ingredients in a variety of final products.

MDG’s Bacillus Concentrates

As a distributor or manufacturer of cleaning supplies for the I&I market, you have a lot of factors to think about when choosing ingredients. Of course, the ingredient’s effectiveness is top priority, but other operational considerations are important as well. At MDG, we understand your needs and work with you to find the best solution for your product lines. One way we do that is with our concentrated Bacillus ingredients.

Using a concentrated ingredient provides all the benefits discussed earlier, but also comes with additional perks. You won’t need to order as much or as often, since a little goes a long way with a concentrate—you’ll be saving money on reordering and shipping costs. Additionally, concentrates take up less space in your physical inventory, since you’re only ordering one container as opposed to multiple containers of a non-concentrated product. This gives you more leeway to expand your product lines and increase profits without running out of room.
